Buying organic food and clothing is about much more than tasty food and nice soft t-shirts, it's a matter of life and death. Pesticide poisoning is a massive problem in the developing world, where 99% of all cases of poisoning occur. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that 25 million agricultural workers may suffer at least one incident of chemical pesticide poisoning each year. Pesticides were also found to be the leading cause of death from poisonings in children in Iran, according to a study conducted there.
Non-organic cotton is one of the most pesticide intensive crops in the world. It covers just 2.5% of the world's cropped area, but uses about a quarter of the world's pesticides. To make that a bit more concrete, there is about 150g (about a third of a cup) of pesticides in every non-organic t-shirt. Pesticides are often applied by teenage day labourers with little training in the correct use of these dangerous chemicals. The World Health Organisation has recorded many cases of suicide and accidental death.
Cokoon is committed to protecting both people and planet, so we use organic cotton wherever possible.
